I took this photo from the dam

This was a fun lesson. I took some photos of the cooling tower of the Shearon Harris nuclear plant from the dam overlook at Jordan Lake. I used Lightoom to make the photo dark and gloomy and added the text.

I took this photo from the dam overlook at Jordan Lake, which is south of Raleigh. Shearon Harris is not far from the lake, which is one of the drinking water supplies for the Triangle. We live about 35 miles from there. I use Photoshop Elements and figured out the steps needed to do this process in PSE. I posted the changes on the class discussion page. I tried the technique on some other photos:

Selective Color processing is one of my go to processing options. This sailboat was enjoying the perfect weather on Lake Pinehurst. I used a Lightroom preset to select just the red in the image.

Selective Color

19 09 2015

I use this technique a lot… maybe too much, but many times it just fits the photo. Selective Color means you pick one color out of the image to emphasize. I seem to pick red a lot, so for class this week, I tried not to use red and used yellow!

This weekend was SPARKcon. A weekend that celebrates the arts. Held in downtown Raleigh in September. The weather was perfect this year. There was an old fashioned wrestling match going on. This is a shot of the losing wrestler. I used Lightroom to keep just the yellow in the image. But his shorts were also yellow, so I used PSE to select the shorts and make them B&W. Of course, I had to try this photo in red:

I liked his boots and wanted to keep the yellow. USE Lightroom to remove all of the color except the yellow. I had to use PSE to select his pants bexause they were also yellow and I didn't want to keep them yellow. You can see other photos from SPARKcon on my blog: https://needlepointernc.wordpress.com/

Silhouette Do Over

9 09 2015

I wasn’t happy with my photos for the Silhouette week, so decided to redo that lesson. We were done in Pinehurst, NC for the weekend. Ours friends have a condo on the lake. Perfect time to get some silhouette photos.  The storms were moving in and the sky started to get dark. I took some photos of the tops of the pine trees. I used Lightroom to make the image darker and used PSE to darken the tree line across the lake.

Woke up at 2:30 AM and saw the moon peaking out behind the pines. We were staying at a friends condo on the lake in Pinehurst, NC. Pinehurst is aptly named and is also home to many gold course. I did not have my tripod with me so I put the camera on the railing, which limited the scene. I used Lightroom to darken and make the grain look gritty. This is a redo for the silhouette week. White on White

2 09 2015

It is like trying to photograph a polar bear in a snow storm! This weeks lesson was to photograph white – just white. No color. Here are my photos:

I used a bolt of polyester batting. Stuck a piece of batting in the center hole and took it outside. Used Lightroom to lighten the shadows, highlights, and whites.

White on White is the lesson of the week. Harder to photograph then you think! I used a bolt of polyester batting. Stuck a piece of batting in the center hole and took it outside.
