The Story

24 07 2015

I was on my way to the City Cemetery in downtown Raleigh to take pictures for my photo class this week. I thought I might find a story there. I had not been there before. But on the way to the cemetery, this photo op happened and I had my story photo for the class.

The Story. Used Lightoom to tone down the color. Used PSE to add the text on the front of the stone.

This is a monument to the Women of the Confederacy. It had been vandalized earlier in the week. I don’t know who the women are who are trying to remove the text. I added the begining text from the Declaration of Independence to the photo. Perhaps a much better way to get a message across? There are many statues around the grounds of the NC State Capital. I did get to the City Cemetery. You can see those photos on my flickr page.

Footwear

17 07 2015

When the cows come home, they take off their shoes. This weeks lesson was about footwear and dominance in photos. I used Lightroom to make the photo black and white and added an HDR and grunge look to it also. I used PSE to add back the color in the Chucks sneakers.

When the cows come home they take off their shoes. Used a pair of my husband's Chucks and a pair of my shoes staged in front of our pet cow. Interestingly, the cow is signed by Dan Featherstone (who just passed away) who designed plastic kitch for a company in Leominster, Massachusetts. We grew up in Worcester, Mass and are very familiar with the plastic industry that employed a lot of people in central Mass. I used Lightroom to change the photo to B&W and HDR and used PSE to add back the color on the logo. Check out my blog and you can find out how we acquired the cow: https://needlepointernc.wordpress.com/

We got this cow when Kevin turned 50. I hired a company to plant 50 flamingos in the yard with a big sign. For some reason they also planted this cow. I just noticed that there is a signature on the cow’s back leg – Dan Featherstone. Dan just passed away. He was the creator of the plastic flamingo and all kinds of plastic kitch. He worked for a company in Leominster, Massachusetts. We grew up in Worcester, Massachusetts. The factories in Leominster were major employers back in the day. Not so much anymore. So, RIP Mr. Featherstone.

I don’t think the company is still in business.

Flowers/Macro

11 07 2015

It is a good week for flowers to be the theme. Lots in bloom around Raleigh this time of the year even with the heat. Went to the Plant Delights July Open House. Most of the gardens are in the shade so didn’t have to spend too much time in the sun. At least it wasn’t humid! I chose this photo for my class this week. It was a hard choice. You can see more photos on my flickr site: https://www.flickr.com/photos/needlepointernc/

I don't have a macro lens, so took my zoom lens and my Lensbaby Muse lens and my regular lens with me to the open house at Plant Delights. They are only open 4 times a year to the public. Most of the gardens are in shade so it wasn't too bad and it wasn't muggy yet just hot. I took a lot of pictures and got a few that were good. But, I like the way this photo processed with Lightroom. You can see the original and the other flower pictures on my blog: https://needlepointernc.wordpress.com/ or on flickr: https://www.flickr.com/photos/needlepointernc/

This photo of a Pitcher Plant was my second choice:

Went to Plant Delights for their July Open House. The gardens are in South Raleigh and are the home of Tony Avent. He grows a lot of unusual plants. There are a lot of shade gardens on the property . This pitcher plant is in the boggy area with other carnivourous plants. I used PSE to select the plant and then inverted the selection so I could make the backfround B&W. I used the clone tool to even out the background. You can see more of my photos from the garden at: https://needlepointernc.wordpress.com/ or at my flickr site: https://www.flickr.com/photos/needlepointernc/

Here are few others that I liked:

Celebration

5 07 2015

What better theme than Celebration for the week of the 4th of July here in the USA. I knew we wouldn’t be going to see any fire works so when I heard that they were having some 4th of July activities at the North Hills Farmer’s Market and that the Knish-A-Licious people were going to be there. The watermelon eating contest was fun to watch and I got some good pics.
