Week 10 Photo of the Week, Mt Baldy, Indiana Sand Dunes

20 03 2009

We stopped to check out these sand dunes in Indiana on our way to Omaha, NE in June, 1998. We were moving to Omaha from Princeton, Massachusetts and needed something to break up the drive.

“The Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore is Northwest Indiana’s jewel. Stretching along Lake Michigan’s southern shoreline, the dunes provide an ecosystem unlike any other. The National Lakeshore stretches along 18 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline, encompassing 14,000 acres of forest, marsh, dunes, and beach. The park is home to 1,500 species of plants ranging from arctic bearberry to cactus.”

They call the sand dune, Mt Baldy. I added 2 more pics that show the dune from the road side. Yes, that is a nuclear plant I think.

Is there supposed to be a mountain here too? Is that an atomic energy plant? Could be due to all the high power lines running there. Nice shot. Love the calm blue water and the contrasting sand.
