Week 52 Photo of the Week, Tatnuck School

25 12 2009

Tatnuck School, originally uploaded by needlepointernc.

This is a picture of the elementary school that I went to in Worcester, Massachusetts. It looks like it did when I went there in the 1960s. I took this picture a few years ago. This is a picture of the 6th grade classroom window that I was in and my teacher’s name was Mr. Powers. In those days men could only teach in the 4th grade and higher!

This is the end of the Photo of the Week challenge for me. I am going to publish a book of my 52 weeks of photos. I tried to choose my favorite photos through the years of my photo taking. I also tried to use photos from the different places that I have lived and the places we have visited. I hope you have enjoyed my journey.

Motif Number 1 – the Reproduction

19 12 2009

Well, it is hard to believe that 52 weeks have gone by already and this challenge is coming to an end. I have enjoyed pulling out 52 of my favorite film captured images through the years. I am going to do a photo book of the 52 images.

I took this photo of Motif Number 1 in Rockport, Massachusetts. I think I took this photo in the late 1980s.  Rockport is one of my favorite places and several images made my top 52. I love the seagull sitting on top of the boat lift post.

From Wikipedia:

Motif Number 1, located on Bradley Wharf in the harbor town of Rockport, Massachusetts, is a fishing shack well-known to students of art and art history as the most often-painted building in America.

Built in the 1840s as Rockport became home to a colony of artists and fishermen, the shack became a favorite subject of painters due to the composition and lighting of its location as well as being a symbol of New England maritime life. Painter Lester Hornby (1882-1956) is believed to be the first to call the shack “Motif Number 1, a reference to its being the favorite subject of the town’s painters, and the name achieved general acceptance.

In the 1930s, painter John Buckley used the shack as his studio. He sold it to the town in 1945, dedicated In 1945, the town of Rockport purchased the Motif as a monument to Rockporters who had served in the Armed Services. The town, recognizing its iconic value, has taken pains to preserve both its structure and appearance, finding a red paint which appears weather-beaten even when new, and keeping the area clear of overhead wires, traffic signs and advertising.

The shack was destroyed during the Blizzard of 1978, but an exact duplicate was constructed that same year.

Week 51 Photo of the Week, Covered Bridge in Vermont

19 12 2009

Covered Bridge in Vermont, originally uploaded by needlepointernc.

This is a covered bridge in Vermont. It is in Quechee, Vermont.

“Steel Stringer, 90′, spanning Ottauquechee River on Waterman Hill Road in Quechee village.

Not an historic bridge, but worthy of mention due to its size, design and prominence as the principal entry to the village from Route 4.”

I used Lightroom presets to change the original photo and framed it with a Superfreaks frame.

Week 50 Photo of the Week, Fountain at the Mall

10 12 2009

Fountain at the Mall, originally uploaded by needlepointernc.

I took a Digital Photography class a few years ago. The goal of the class was to take pictures that did not need to be Photoshopped! Well, this was one of my favorite shots of the fountain at the mall. This lesson was about using the Tv option on the camera to stop the action.

Week 49 Photo of the Week, Custer State Park Lake

4 12 2009

Custer State Park Lake, originally uploaded by needlepointernc.

We went to South Dakota when we were living in Omaha, Nebraska. I think this picture was taken in 1999 on Labor Day Weekend. This lake is in Custer State Park. The park is beautiful and I wish we had stayed in the park. You can drive through the park and see buffalo and prairie dogs, and the Needles. The Needles are these spikey rock mountains that are part of the Black Hills. They are very cool.

Used a Lightroom preset (EFF Dragan) to make the needle darker and more textured.

Week 48 Photo of the Week, Cambridge, Massachusetts

29 11 2009

Have a Coke, originally uploaded by needlepointernc.

I took this picture from the car before getting on the Massachusetts Turnpike in Allston, Massachusetts. I took this when I was in college, so it was probably around 1975.

Week 47 Photo of the Week, Pow Wow Fancy Dance

19 11 2009

I took this photo at a Pow Wow at The Fort in Omaha, Nebraska in 2000. The Omaha Tribe was one of the tribes participating in the Pow Wow. This is a picture of the Fancy Dance competition.

“Historic Fort Omaha, located at 30th and Fort Streets in Omaha, Nebraska, entered into service in 1868. Omaha’s Metropolitan Community College began using the facility in August 1975 for technical and other types of training. The facility is now a thriving community college that has preserved a historical focal point of north Omaha. Terms of use for Metropolitan Community College dictate that the historic parade ground and exteriors of brick buildings cannot be altered.”

Week 46, Photo of the Week, Quabbin Resevoir

6 11 2009

Quabbin Resevoir, originally uploaded by needlepointernc.

I think I took this picture of the Quabbin Reservoir at least 10 years ago. You can see the reservoir in the center of the picture. The Quabbin provides water to eastern Massachusetts. It is located in Central Massachusetts. There is nothing like fall in New England. I took this picture with a disposable panoramic camera.

Week 45 Photo of the Week, Glad Tidings

28 10 2009

Reap What You Sow, originally uploaded by needlepointernc.

I took this picture in 2000 in Wood River, Nebraska. We were passing through on our way home from seeing the annual migration of the Sandhill Cranes. We went to Cabela’s and passed by this sign and I also took some pictures of the Union Pacific trains.

I used Lightroom presets to isolate the red, blur the background and add a vignette. Makes the image look more ominous!

Week 44 Photo of the Week, Sakonnet River

22 10 2009

Sakonnet River, originally uploaded by needlepointernc.

I took this picture of the Sakonnet River in Porstmouth, RI. One of my college firends lived up the hill from this dock. I took this picture in the 1975 time frame in the Winter.
